John Lennon once said, “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”
Some of the following are great therapy techniques, however, I do strongly suggest and recommend doing them in conjunction with a licensed Psychiatrist. Furthermore, this article is not intended to diagnose, or cure any disease. However, they are alternative methods to help you along your path towards health and healing in overcoming your fears.
Fear can be an extremely paralyzing experience. One traumatic event can affect a person’s entire life. In Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is believed that too much fear causes an energy imbalance in the body that leads to disease.
In conjunction with traditional therapy, counseling, and Reiki the following can be incredibly effective!
We all have fears. Whether it is a fear of germs and illnesses; fear of death and dying; a fear of independence; or the fear of not being enough; we are all too human in all of these. Everyone has some sort of phobia that stems from the fear of the unknown, for which there is always a reason. However, when our fears begin to take over our lives and start damaging our relationships with ourselves, others, or our environment; we must stop and pause and ask ourselves, “why?” “Why am I afraid?” “Why do I listen to media propaganda?” and “Why do I continue to stay?” when we are afraid of others and truly dangerous situations/relationships. Why give into the storm of fear, when we can embrace love and a truer sense of responsible rationality? This type of questioning ultimately leads us down an empowering journey self-healing and self-discovery where we learn the tools necessary to confront and conquer our fears.
1. Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy helps many clients with phobias and fears.
To sum it all up: “If you get into the habit of feeling confident and calm whilst hypnotically rehearsing lots of different situations you are quickly going to become generally a calmer more confident and a braver person naturally and instinctively.” ― Mark Tyrrell, therapist, trainer and author
While getting a Reiki treatment in conjunction, with hypnotherapy feels absolutely amazing! There are several Reiki practitioners that eventually get into Hypnotherapy anyway. This type of service shouldn’t be too hard to find. But if you cant in your area, a self-healing before and after your therapy session would be instrumental in solidifying your psyche.
2. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Technique
The same can be said for EMDR. Getting or using your self-healing techniques before AND after would be incredibly grounding and centering.
EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.”
“Twenty positive controlled outcome studies have been done on EMDR. Some of the studies show that 84%-90% of single-trauma victims no longer have post-traumatic stress disorder after only three 90-minute sessions. Another study, funded by the HMO Kaiser Permanente, found that 100% of the single-trauma victims and 77% of multiple trauma victims no longer were diagnosed with PTSD after only six 50-minute sessions. In another study, 77% of combat veterans were free of PTSD in 12 sessions.” ― EMDR Institute, Inc.
3. Exposure Therapy
I know there are behavioral therapies that are quite effective as well, such as exposure therapy.
“Exposure Therapy retrains your Amygdala, the little almond shaped part of your brain, that forces us to make Fight or Flight decisions
You don’t have to do this radically and quickly. What you need to do is to continually arrange to activate your Amygdala by exposing yourself to what you fear, and then stay in place, making sure that the fear leaves before you do. You can use a variety of coping steps to help you do that, or you can just “float”, as Claire Weekes called it, and wait for the fear to subside. Either way, Exposure Therapy will enable you to retrain your Amygdala with new learning in ways it can absorb.” ― David Carbonell, Ph.D. Anxiety Coach
Confronting our fears is essential as a Reiki Practitioner. We know that there are always layers to work through. Every day is a new challenge, however, if we live and breathe in a state of fear, how can we effectively help others? Ultimately, if you haven’t already, you will be confronted with them during or after a client’s session. What is important is remembering your grounding techniques, cry if you have to, yell if you have to, and allow yourself those emotional releases.
4. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping Technique
This one you could do and learn on your own. Much like acupressure and Reiki tapping techniques, EFT follows a pattern of set points, much like a meridian.
“Simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the head and chest while you think about your specific problem – whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc. — and voice positive affirmations.” ― Dr. Joseph Mercola
Usui Sensei taught several other techniques which did include tapping. Try visualizing energy moving along the meridian with your fingers, and alternate with visualizing energy blockages releasing with each tap.
5. Chanting Mantras, Affirmations, or Reiki Principle #2.
I always tell my students, when we affirm something to ourselves, we affirm it to be true. Words have power, they carry a vibration, and if repeated over and over again, they affect our brain wave patterns and levels of anxiety.
Many people I know simply count “One. Two. Three,” and repeat it as necessary. Others prefer Sanskrit mantras like, “Om Dakini Namah.” (I activate my security.)
And, lastly, remember those chants you’re “supposed” to recite every morning and night? If you aren’t a Reiki Practitioner, there is a Reiki Principle or Precept which states “Just for today, I will not worry,” or “Just for today, I will not be afraid.” If you like, try chanting the Precept in Japanese: “Kyo dake wa, Shinpai su na.”This has worked very well for me, when I am going through a random release of my own.
“Do one thing every day that scares you.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt
6. Breathe From the Stomach
“Once you recognize fear as an energy feeling in the body, you have the power to convert it into a more positive feeling. One of the greatest ways to do is through breathing from the energy center in the stomach.
EXERCISE:
1. Place you awareness on your abdomen
2. Set your two hands on the abdomen
3. On the inhale, expand your whole body
4. On the exhale, contract your whole body
5. Always inhale through the nose
6. Breath in and out massaging the internal organs
7. Your belly should feel like it’s filling up with water
Now, try this a few times by reading my instructions. You can even copy this page and paste it near your meditation area for a quick lesson. Soon, it will become second nature to you.” ― Robert Piper, speaker, author, specialist in Eastern meditation systems, and an advocate for a happier society.
What’s cool about this technique is you can do it anywhere. At your desk, in your car, in an elevator, or in the park. It would be even more powerful if you took your lunch-break outside, and breathed in this way while giving yourself a Reiki Self-Healing Session.
7. Meditation, QiGong, or Pranayama Yoga
These three techniques and exercises can be used either on their own, or together. The ancients created these techniques and they have been working for thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years. (Depends on which modern historian’s theories and research you read.) Give ’em a go! Watch some youtube videos or go check out some books at the library. Better yet, sign up for a free class in your area! I am sure someone, somewhere is teaching these for a very little amount of money. Maybe it’s FREE?
But regardless, they all seemed and seem to work for billions of people throughout the ages. Give it a try and see how it affects your levels of fear and anxiety. What do you have to lose? It’s not like it will get worse with these stress-relieving techniques.
8. Crystal Therapy

Imagine getting a Reiki Crystal Therapy Session for an hour… Talk about relaxing and moving!
9. Aromatherapy
I love using essential oils. You can either diffuse, directly inhale, or add 3-7 drops total to bath water (as long as you add them to a carrier like epsom/sea salt, honey, or baking soda before you add to the bath.) You can also massage 1–2 drops of pure essential oils on your temples, neck, and wrists.
**Caution: Keep out of reach of children. If pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use.**Also, inform yourself! Some should be applied with a carrier oil like coconut due to sensitivity. Also, citrus essential oils are phototoxic in extreme heat and with high sun-exposer, you may develop sunburn and/or skin discolouration. (However, there are other oils for this ailment.)
Sue Bovenizer, a natural health therapist certified in Aromatherapy, Massage and CranioSacral Therapy and Integral Yoga instruction; suggests the following:
“General oils that are useful in alleviating fear are chamomile, lavender, geranium, marjoram, bergamot, frankincense, neroli, and sandalwood. These oils can be used in combination or alone in an aroma lamp, bath, or in a massage oil. They can be helpful for children as well as adults, although with children one would use only one drop of up to three essential oils in a formula.
Oils supportive in detoxing the body after a sudden trauma or threat are lemon, juniper, sandalwood, clary sage and geranium. These are best massaged onto the body, especially around the kidney area (where the Chinese believe fear is stored). Bathing in a combination of these oils is very useful in clearing the system of adrenalin build-up, as well as tonifying the kidneys.
When fear is a constant in one’s life, because of job insecurity, stock market troubles, or general over-whelm, then oils such as fennel, ylang-ylang, frankincense, elemi, lavender and cypress can certainly calm the nervous system and relax the weary mind to bring back equilibrium and balance.
Love can bring up fears in even the strongest of characters. Some oils that assist in conquering fear of intimacy are rose maroc, neroli, jasmine, and ylang-ylang. Add patchouli, carnation or rose otto to the recipe if there is a fear of sexuality. And add galbanum and frankincense if a balance between the masculine and feminine is desired.”
Sue also offers Infant and Pediatric CST, Somato-Emotional Release work, Visceral Manipulation and Reiki (Master level). Sue maintains a practice in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Imagine getting a Reiki Crystal Aromatherapy Session for even just 30 minutes… Mind BLOWN! Talk about pealing back some energetic layers! You can always bring a bottle of your essential oil of choice to a session, and ask your practitioner to use it. If for insurance reasons they are unable to, they will simply have you apply the oils first.
10. Young Living Raindrop Technique of Oola Balance or Valor Blend
This technique involves applying therapeutic grade essential oils to the spine, neck and feet. Essential oils are actually dropped from about 6 inches above your spine, simulating rain drops! It feels like a rain drop gently striking your spine, and it is very relaxing and comforting. The session lasts about an hour however the benefits may last up to a week or more.
Gary found that combining several holistic techniques, described below, created a synergistic effect for the body. The three modalities that combine to form Raindrop Technique are:
- Aromatherapy – Raindrop technique uses seven single essential oils, two blends and one essential oil massage blend during the session. It is congruent with the French application of aromatherapy where essential oils are applied NEAT (undiluted) to the body.
- Vita Flex Technique – Vita Flex was brought to the US in the 1920s by Stanley Burroughs. It is an ancient Tibetan healing methodology meaning “vitality through the reflexes”. Its theory is based on the fact that slight pressure applied to the body creates an electric charge that is therapeutic to the body. This is known as piezoelectric.
- Feather Stroking – This is similar to a massage term technique called effleurage. But this technique was actually termed by the Native American Indians.
Oola Balance Essential Oil Blend is designed to align and balance your center giving you an increase in concentration with a positive outlook. As mind and body are balanced, the ability to focus on passions, behaviors, and health are amplified for the better. It has over twenty therapeutic grade essential oils in Oola Balance! They include: Lavender (Lavandula Officinal), Frankincence (Boswellia Carteri), Ocotea (Ocotea Quixos Lauraceae Leaf), Sandalwood (Santalum Album), Ylang Ylang (Cananga Odorata), Orange (Citrus Auranium), Angelica (Angelica Archangelica), Geranium (Pelargonium Graveol), Hyssop (Officinalis), Sage (Lavendulifolia), Spruce (Picea Mariana), Coriander (Coriandrum Sativum), Bergamot (Coumarin Free), Lemon (Citrus Limon), Jasmine (Jasminum Absolute), Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum Nobile), Palmarosa (Cymbopogon Martinii), Rose (Rosa Damascena), Balsam Fir (Abies Balsamea), Myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha), Cistus (Cistus Ladanifer), Spikenard (Nardostachys Jataman), Blue Spruce (Picea Pungens).
Valor Essential Oil Blend is an empowering combination of therapeutic-grade essential oils that works with both the physical and spiritual aspects of the body to increase feelings of strength, courage, and self-esteem in the face of adversity. Renowned for its strengthening qualities, Valor enhances an individual’s internal resources. It has also been found to help energy alignment in the body. Valor may only have four essential oils including: Spruce (Picea mariana), rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum) and frankincense (Boswellia carteri) in a base of coconut oil; but it is no less effective.

I like to take a Bach Flower Remedy before visiting family during the holidays, and while I give myself a self-healing session. These are great because if you feeling afraid, instead of popping pill after pill, sometimes all you need is a good old fashioned Flower Remedy. However, if you are on a prescription already, PLEASE CONSULT your doctor before going off your meds. Oftentimes, you can do a trial period and gradually lower your dose via a tapper while taking the remedies because they don’t interfere with narcotics.
